Heat pumps have changed the world. They move heat by cycling a refrigerant between gas and liquid — absorbing or releasing heat to give you both heating and cooling, or in a water heater, constant hot water. The refrigerant is nearly maintenance-free and the heat comes from the surrounding air, not a gas flame or electric element. Advancements in refrigerants and condensers now let many heat pumps pull heat from air down to 0°F.
